'Taking his cue from the original club sign, Newton plays on this familiar emblem and twists the design into a contemporary graphic which he displays on the skin of a bass drum. The drum sits as if discarded or forgotten by an in-house band and fades into the permanent decor of the club. Engaging with the space's links with entertainment and performance, Newton offers the viewer a celebration of the club's traditions which continue to be explored today.' This interdisciplinary exhibition will invade the social spaces, cupboards, stairwells and even toilets of the Club, featuring specially commissioned paintings, sculptures, installations, videos, photographs, architectural interventions and performances. The works will reflect on the history of the Club and its role today, as well as its location in Bethnal Green at the heart of East London.

John Henry Newton and Clemence de La Tour du Pin are an Anglo-French creative duo who are currently collaborating in London. Their collective work appears very conversational, almost like three dimensional diagrams of symbol and language that are strung together by drawings, texts and objects. They have a firm ethic of "doing something" which means that their performative installations become messy monuments to their own creative process. This seems to capture an element of the everyday, with found materials and familiar themes recurring throughout the spaces they manipulate. Like a soup of the freshest ingredients, their blend of material, subject and concept is always best served hot (with a small pinch of salt)

Currently working towards my participation in Test! - a festival of performance and multimedia held in Zagreb, Croatia in March. I've also been collaborating with French, London based artist Clemence De La Tour Du Pin (You can check her work at http://clemencedelatourdupin.blogspot.com/) We've been busy creating installation works that involve drawings, prints and objects curated within a space; i suppose you could compare us to termites who add rather than subtract - we're obviously a lot bigger though. The results appear to be very conversational, almost like three dimensional diagrams that reveal connections of subject and language. We both have a similar interest in making work with a mixed media approach so its pretty playful; i don't think any material is safe, not even the humble potato.

'In the beginnning was Debord...'

studio1.1’s Xmas extravaganza explores Situationism in we hope a suitably random way. We’re well aware that there can't be Situationist art as such, it's a contradiction in terms. We know too that, in Blake's ultra-visionary foreshadowing of Hegel ('without contraries there's no progression'), without contradictions there is just no dialectic.

And in the years since the Situationists sought to define themselves and increasingly what and who they were NOT, there can’t be a single artist who however mistakenly hasn’t felt a Situationist sciatic twinge. (to further mis-quote, this time a fictional character ‘...only the ‘Situation’ has grown small’)

Straddling the New Year we bring together just for Christmas (not for life) a group of artists who can be defined at the very least as 'not NOT Situationist'.
