Message in a bottle.

Somewhere in the cobwebbed cellar of the decrepit antebellum mansion known as Ballineen are the legendary Lee bottles -- and Austin Gillespie is there to find them. The last thing on his mind is hot and heavy romance with handsome bad boy Jeff Brady. But Jeff has other ideas and, after one intoxicating night, so does Austin.

The only problem is they have different ideas. Jeff doesnít believe in love at first sight, and even if he did, heís buried more deeply in the closet than those famous missing bottles of vintage Madeira. Popping a cork or two is one thing. Popping the question? No way. No how.

Unless Austin is ready to give up on another dream, heís going to have to figure out how to make sure the lights go on -- and stay on -- in Georgia.

I've loved all of Josh Lanyon's stories- every stinking one, so I was taken aback when I came across some negative reviews online for this story. It put me off reading it for a while, but I caved when I realized I'm down to about 3 left to read on the JL backlist. I'm glad I gave it a chance because I really liked it. Do I like it as much as some of his other works? No, but it's well worth a read- as long as an m/m/f scene isn't going to make you go ballistic.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the m/m/f plot device but I can live w/ it because of the plausibility of it in real life. A closeted man in GA trying to convince himself that sex is just sex, regardless of the partner? Trying to disguise his deeper, truer desires by adding a woman to the mix? Pretty sure it happens more than I'd think. Did I wish Jeff had found another way to illustrate his point to Austin? Yep, you betcha. What it ended up doing was the opposite. Rather than proving it's just physical, Jeff ends up being remorseful that he'd hurt Austin. There was an ick factor here for me, but I still wanted these MCs to be with each other.

The story overall was entertaining & I liked the secondary characters. They added a certain Southern charm & zaniness. Even the female addition to the 'ick' scene was harmless & charming in her own way. This is Lanyon so there is a mystery, but it felt a bit on the light side in this story. Still, very interesting w/ the wine facts & history. I also enjoyed the downfall of Austin's professional nemesis at the end. It was referenced in brief passing but still satisfying.

The writing was excellent- goes w/out saying, but I do think there was more exposition in the story vs illustration via action/dialogue than I'm used to from Lanyon. The most heartfelt parts were definitely w/ Austin & you want to give him a hug and a kick in the ass sometimes. His brother, Ernest, was a gem, as was their relationship. I loved the references to Austin's stepmoms & stepsisters by their number in the family roster.

The only complaint I EVER have w/ Lanyon's stories is that they tend to end rather abruptly, & this one felt even more so than usual. I found Lanyon's Merry Christmas, Darling codas which gives you a brief, but further, glimpse into a slew of MCs lives, but Austin & Jeff are not on the list. Bummed because I'd like to check in w/ these guys to see how they're doing. It was a little too open-ended for me. Mr Lanyon, EPILOGUES WELCOME!!!

Not a Lanyon favorite but still recommend! (But NOT if the m/m/f scene is going to make you angry- you've been forewarned!)

A Vintage Affair edition by Josh Lanyon Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Very well written short story. Loved the character of Earnest, sad that the author didn't tell us what the plan was for him in the fall.

The mystery was set-up really well, but this is definitely a romance story, and the solving of the crime happened completely off stage, which was slightly disappointing, because there was a great story there.

The Cashel family portrayal is tons of fun. They're a very quirky deep south family - though I don't know if typical or not. This story could have easily been novel-length, based on the author's attention to detail, and the way she created a whole cast of non-cookie cutter characters.

The use of "wine" language in Austin's POV was stellar, and very consistent and clever throughout. I'll be reading more from this writer.
For some reason when I bought this (and I usually buy both the kindle and the audio - depending on the narrator) I only read into a couple pages and simply couldn't get into it at the time. HOWEVER, after reading a number of other Josh Lanyon books I found I liked his style of writing and I'm taken with his lead characters who are much like "Adrienne English" in type. So I gave it another try. Surprisingly, of all his books this one has one of the most erotic (for JL's stories) sex scenes I've ever read...and it was certainly not a love scene. I was as disturbed as Austin was I think but it was perfect for the story - made for an unexpected twist. The two lead characters - Austin and Jeff were great. I loved Jeff's sly humor and personality and Austin...you just wanted to protect him. I would highly recommend.
I started reading sappy romances quite some time ago, and when they started getting boring I found I enjoyed gay romances as well. I found this one really cute, well written. The characters were really likeable and well developed.

I didn't find the plot line all that interesting- the "mystery" was not very well fleshed out, and the wine aspect was a bit boring to me- but others might find it more interesting. I think possibly the author could have added some more... something to make it appeal to a broader audience.

This book is very well edited, paces along nicely, no grammar or spelling/typographical issues like one often sees in self published books. The sex is often explicit but I found it tasteful (although of course there is both m/m and m/f/m sex, the m/f/m sex was written from the POV of someone very uncomfortable/troubled with the reality of m/f sex, so I am surprised to see that a gay person had a problem with this book. I thought it took a kind of realistic view of the painful reality of trying to have a relationship with someone who hasn't yet come to terms with their own sexuality, and that particular scene did not turn out well, no big spoiler there).

Anyway, cute story with some real deep scenes, I liked it!
Another excellent read from Josh Lanyon. There were a number of things that I found problematic about this story but the overall impact was very strong so I think it deserves 5 stars. First the good news as always Lanyon draws the reader in and manages to take you for a heart-wrenching emotional ride. The bad news the story was a bit uneven, it didn't have much of the great Lanyon humor and Jeff was a jerk and pretty much remained one through to the end. That said, it was an interesting story with an uncharacteristic but interesting dark side and I loved it for that. I had no faith that this pair would stay together but luckily Josh's "character interview" on his website proves that my doubts were misplaced. I loved this story and though the menage scene displeased some readers, I found it added to the depth of the story and made it that much more interesting. I think this one is a must read.
